Good Grief!!! Milk costs what now!!!
I cannot believe I am paying over $4 for a gallon of milk. I think it's time to buy a cow. Or...maybe there are other solutions. I have been able to find it under $4 by going to places like Dollar General and Family Dollar, you have to shop around to find the best prices but if everyone goes to the same place does the demand for more milk increase the price (economics 101)?
With cost aside, milk is a necessity in life. Milk gives us certain vitamins for healthy bones and teeth. I read an article recently that list 3 reasons all people, of any age, need to drink milk.
3 Benefits to Drinking Milk Daily
1) It reduces risk of some diseases like colon cancer, osteoporosis, as well as hypertension.
2) It builds strong bones and teeth.
3) Milk helps you sleep.
The article says even when you are lactose intolerant you can find milk product that helps you to still have the milk you need daily in your life, but I think that costs even more. :(
Now that we know some of the benefits to drinking milk, how do we get past the cost of milk? As I said earlier, shopping around is helpful, I shop around my area for the best prices for everything. Another option is one my mother did when I was a kid while living in a high inflation period. She used to buy powdered milk.
She would take a gallon of whole milk and she would pour half, or sometimes thirds, into other containers. Then she would make a few quarts of powdered milk and add to the whole milk. This gave us a 2% or 1% taste of milk. We never knew the difference but it always helped her to stretch her budget money. She was a single mom working long hours to make ends meet and this was a solution to her problem. I thought it was a brilliant idea to saving dollars and still getting the vitamins you need.
I just recently read an article that asked the question about powdered milk being bad for you. I've attached it here for you to read for yourself.
Is Powdered Milk Bad for You?
Lets look at the cost of Instant Non-fat dried milk:
Walmart Brand $7.78 for 25.6 oz
Shelf Reliance $21.19 for 3.38 lbs
Ebay (variety of product) $47.50 for 10lbs
There are a variety of places you can find the product, you have to shop for what is best for you and your family. Here are some tips that can be helpful.
Powdered Milk Storage Tips
Saving Money with Powdered Milk
The shelf life of the dry milk product varies but average is about 8-10 years.
Shelf Life of Dry Milk
If you are someone like me then you want to be prepared for times of high cost in foods, or disaster; having an option for milk on hand is comforting. We use milk in preparation of many foods daily, using powdered milk as a substitute can also save money. So drink the regular stuff and use dry milk for cooking.
I hope this information is helpful, I know it was for me in my research process. I would love to hear more about your use of powdered milk or creative ways you saved money using powdered milk.

Saving by Making Homemade Treats
This year I am trying to save as much money as I can but not everyone in the house understands that concept. So I tried to think of ways to save money but still meet the wants of my family. As I was browsing I found some cool recipes that keep the favorite treats in the budget. Yes, it may require more of my time to prepare them but this helps to keep up with two of my goals, savings and family fun.

Leftover Ideas After Thanksgiving
So...we like to have a big turkey just so we can have leftovers. We eat turkey sandwiches mostly with leftovers but this year I want to see what else we can do with the leftovers.
Here is a recipe for Thanksgiving Leftover Casserole, looks good.

How about Turkey Soup?

Thanksgiving Traditional Foods
Thanksgiving seems to be a holiday that everyone wants to forget and get out of the way. If it weren't for the food we would probably skip it. So in order to keep it we have to focus on the food. You have probably already planned your menu for Thanksgiving but I found some good recipes that might be worth trying.
I love Thanksgiving but at m y house we seem to eat the same old things every year. Don't get me wrong, I do love those things but maybe a little change in the menu or taste in the recipes could make a little more excitement about the holiday.
I never really cared much for sweet potatoes but after I tried this recipe I looked forward to having this dish every year. I don't like pecans so I don't add that in my recipe.

Macaroni and Cheese!!!
I loved going to my grandparents house when I was a little girl. I would run in the front door and give them both a hug then run to the kitchen, open the fridge and grab the box of Velveeta Cheese. They always had some in the fridge, I always thought it was just for me. But I found out later that my family loved and that many people have a love for cheese.
The Velveeta Cheese Company has been around since the early 1900's. It was my first love affair with cheese.
The Velveeta Cheese Company has been around since the early 1900's. It was my first love affair with cheese.
Now, Velveeta has other products that it sells. There are Velveeta Skillets which are meals made using the Velveeta Cheese and pasta with chicken or ground beef.
But my family created these meals before Velveeta did.
Here are a couple of things we did with Kraft Mac and Cheese, then on special occasion we used Velveeta Mac and Cheese.
Mac & Cheese/Hamburger was our rendition of Hamburger Helper.
1 box of Kraft Mac & Cheese, or Velveeta Mac & Cheese
1 pound of lean ground beef
2 T Worcester Sauce
Brown ground beef and drain off grease. Put ground beef back in pan and add worcester sauce, mix together and heat on low. While browning ground beef, boil a pot of water and make mac and cheese as directed. Drain the water off the macaroni and add the macaroni to the ground beef mixture then add the remaining ingredients for the macaroni, mixing it all well with the ground beef mixture. Then that's it, enjoy!
Its inexpensive and fast to make.
Now, you can make it with homemade mac and cheese. Here is a link for homemade, just add the bround beef mixture to the homemade mac and cheese to get a healthier version.
We just recently tried it with chicken and Velveeta mac and cheese, it wasn't too bad, but not something we would eat a lot of. I guess we have to experiment with flavors, maybe we will add bacon bits next time.
What do you do with macaroni and cheese? We'd love to hear your ideas so we can introduce new meals for our families. Have fun!!!

Fall Weather Foods
It's Fall, and one of the things that reminds me it's Fall is the coolness in the weather. And when it's cool I think of hot soups, stews, and chili; well, my mom reminds me of the chili part. Florida got it's first cool weather of the season and I started thinking of the warm delicious foods that I love in the Fall. So I went out searching for some good recipes for these foods. Hope you enjoy them!
